The Controversy of Messi's Celebration Among Mexican Fans
Lionel Messi recently stirred emotions among Mexican soccer fans during a friendly match, leading to discussions regarding his celebration after scoring.
Lionel Messi is back in action as Inter Miami CF kicked off their preseason with a match against the reigning Liga MX champions, Club América, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Messi scored to level the match in the 34th minute. The game concluded with Inter Miami winning in a penalty shootout, enhancing their status as favorites for the upcoming MLS season, but controversy brewed over Messi’s celebration.
What Happened?
After scoring, Messi celebrated by gesturing a “3-0” towards Club América fans, igniting a backlash.
Why Are Mexico Fans Upset?
Although it wasn’t a match against the Mexican national team, it was played against a premier Mexican club, which was perceived as disrespectful. Historically, Argentina has triumphed over Mexico, including a notable 3-0 victory in the 2007 Copa América, where Messi scored. Additionally, Argentina beat Mexico 2-0 in the group stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with Messi scoring the opener.
Reactions
Inter Miami’s coach, Javier Mascherano, stated:
“The truth is that I have not spoken to Leo. I have not given it more importance. I think that we have more important issues to deal with. Logically, I have had to play against Mexican teams and against the Mexican national team. We know that they are usually hostile towards us Argentines.”
However, former Mexican national team player Adolfo “Bofo” Bautista criticized Messi’s actions:
“I admired you as a player, but making fun of my country speaks on your lack of professionalism and education.”
Messi has not yet made a public comment regarding the incident.
