Pochettino Confident USMNT Can Achieve World Cup Glory Within a Decade

U.S. Men's National Team coach Mauricio Pochettino expresses optimism about America's potential to become the world's top soccer nation in the next 5-10 years.

U.S. men’s national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino believes that within the next 5 to 10 years, the team could be considered the best in the world. In a recent interview, he stated:

“In five or 10 years, for sure we can be No. 1 in the world. It could be.”

This statement was made as the team prepares for the Concacaf Nations League Finals, marking Pochettino’s first chance to secure a trophy in his new role. He praised U.S. soccer’s plans for a $200 million training center set to open in 2026, noting it will be a significant step for soccer in America.

In response to FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s comments on America’s potential to win the next World Cup, Pochettino expressed optimism, albeit cautiously. He noted:

“Infantino [says], ‘Yes, U.S. can win the World Cup,’ because the president asked. We can win?”

While the USMNT is recognized for its improving player pool, with many players competing in top European leagues, consistency at that level remains a challenge. Matching the 2002 quarterfinal finish at the World Cup is seen as a more realistic goal for the upcoming tournament in 2026.

The coach’s vision is ambitious amid the complexities of international soccer, focusing on development and success in youth programs to close the gap with traditional soccer powerhouses worldwide.
