Japan has secured the first qualification spot for the 2026 World Cup by defeating Bahrain 2-0, marking their return to the tournament.

Japan has made history by becoming the first team to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup after overcoming Bahrain with a decisive 2-0 victory at Saitama Stadium on Thursday.

Second-half goals from Daichi Kamada and Takefusa Kubo illuminated their path to qualification, ensuring that the Samurai Blue clinched a top two position in Asia Group C’s automatic qualification.

This will mark Japan’s eighth consecutive World Cup appearance, joining co-hosts United States, Canada, and Mexico in the expanded 48-team tournament.

Qualification Structure

The top two teams from each of the three six-team groups in the final round of Asian qualification will enter the World Cup, while the third and fourth-placed teams will compete for additional spots.

South Korea remains on course for its 11th World Cup appearance despite a challenging draw against Oman 1-1, with captain Son Heung-min emphasizing the tough grind of the qualification.

“People may think this qualification round is easy, but we have to work hard for every match. A match like this teaches us a lesson; we need to extract every possible positive,” shared Son Heung-min.
