Virginia Appoints Ryan Odom as Head Coach Following Historic Upset

Ryan Odom takes over as head coach of Virginia after previously leading UMBC to a historic NCAA Tournament upset.

Virginia has secured Ryan Odom as its next head coach, just a short drive from where he has been coaching at VCU. Odom is renowned for leading UMBC to a historic victory against the No. 1 seed Virginia during the 2018 NCAA Tournament. After navigating a tough defeat to BYU recently, Odom will officially sign with the Cavaliers, with an announcement expected soon.

Odom, who’s familiar with Charlottesville through family ties—his father served as an assistant coach there in the 1980s—will be succeeding Tony Bennett, who shockingly retired prior to this season. This appointment underscores Virginia’s commitment to rejuvenating its men’s basketball program after a disappointing few seasons following their championship victory.
