Rays' Shane McClanahan Departs with Possible Arm Injury Ahead of Opening Day

The standout pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, Shane McClanahan, has left his final practice before the Opening Day due to a worrying arm injury.

The Tampa Bay Rays’ pitcher Shane McClanahan was set to start for the opening day on Friday but faced a setback during his final practice session. He left with indications of an arm injury, raising concerns ahead of the new season.

Injury Details

McClanahan, who had undergone Tommy John surgery in August of 2023, appeared to show signs of distress immediately after delivering a pitch. A video of the moment shows him signaling towards the dugout with visible discomfort.

Ryan Bass: “#Rays ace Shane McClanahan just left this game accompanied by head trainer Joe Benge. Here’s video of his final pitch, showing some serious discomfort. He immediately signaled toward the dugout. Will update when I know more. pic.twitter.com/dnhY8KPBTV

With McClanahan holding his arm down at his side, it appeared serious. The pitchers’ history includes a stellar performance prior to his surgery, and the Rays hope for a quick recovery.

Manager Kevin Cash confirmed the injury is to McClanahan’s triceps and stated further testing will take place soon. Last year, the team concluded with a disappointing record of 80-82, their worst since 2017.
