Lindsey Vonn Achieves Historic Silver Medal in World Cup After Comeback

Lindsey Vonn makes history as the oldest woman to medal in a World Cup race after her return from retirement.

Four months post-retirement, Lindsey Vonn returned to the World Cup podium, securing silver in the super-G at the finals in Sun Valley, Idaho. At 40, she becomes the oldest woman to medal in this prestigious event. Vonn’s return follows a challenging period marked by injuries and a partial knee replacement surgery, through which she aims to complete her career with a finale at the 2026 Olympics in Italy. Notably, this silver marks her first podium finish since March 2018.

Vonn expressed, “This is the level that I know I can ski…and I proved everyone wrong.”

With 82 career World Cup wins, Vonn stands only behind Mikaela Shiffrin and Ingemar Stenmark in all-time victories, alongside her three Olympic medals, including a gold in Vancouver 2010. The weekend outside Sun Valley was dominated by Italy’s Federica Brignone, who clinched the overall championship due to weather-induced cancellations.
