Hailey Van Lith Reflects on Past Mental Health Challenges as TCU Advances
The star guard opens up about her struggles with mental health while celebrating TCU's Sweet 16 achievement.
NOTE: This story contains discussion regarding suicidal thoughts.
Shortly after assisting TCU in reaching the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history with an 85-70 victory over Louisville, star guard Hailey Van Lith candidly discussed her past mental health struggles, which began years ago when she was a top recruit.
“The way I was exposed to the media and social media at such a young age presented serious mental health challenges for me,” said Van Lith. “During my younger and collegiate years, I faced suicidal thoughts and was heavily medicated; I felt trapped. You could never tell because I was thriving on the court, but inside, I was ready to give up.”
“That’s what I refer to when I talk about suffering and pain. At times, I didn’t even want to live.”
Below is a powerful message from Hailey Van Lith discussing her mental health journey, emphasizing how this journey has transformed her life:
“To go from that to where I am now is incredible. I’ve been praying all year, like, ‘God, I know you’ve given me this testimony to share and shine your light.’ I believe this is the year, this is the moment that people need to hear my story and see how you’ve lifted me from the depths of despair to a life full of love.”
Van Lith and her team will compete against No. 3 seed Notre Dame in the Sweet 16.
