Emma Hayes Relies on Veterans to Bridge Experience Gap in USWNT's New Era

USWNT head coach Emma Hayes emphasizes the importance of veteran presence as the team prepares for upcoming friendlies and a wider player pool exploration.

U.S. women’s national team head coach Emma Hayes will continue to explore the wider player pool in the team’s friendlies against Brazil next month but is counting on several veterans to guide new players through the expectations of international play.

Hayes has made roster choices in the post-Olympics period, including up to 11 players with few international caps. Observing injuries among major team members, such as Naomi Girma, who suffered an injury during her Chelsea debut, she’s calling on veterans like Lindsey Heaps, Lynn Biyendolo, Sam Coffey, Tierna Davidson, Crystal Dunn, and Emily Sonnett to help with integration during these training camps.

“In the last camp, we spoke about leadership roles and how supporting newcomers is vital,” Hayes shared during a recent press conference, emphasizing the importance of non-negotiables and performance standards, regardless of a player’s experience level.

With friendlies slated on April 5 and April 8 against Brazil, the head coach is keen to adapt lessons for player growth after acknowledging issues in the team’s previous match against Japan.
