Bucks Announce Damian Lillard's Indefinite Absence Due to Calf Condition
Damian Lillard of the Milwaukee Bucks is out indefinitely due to deep vein thrombosis in his right calf.
Damian Lillard of the Milwaukee Bucks will be sidelined indefinitely due to deep vein thrombosis in his right calf and is currently on blood-thinning medication.
The Bucks announced this condition, stating that there is no target date for Lillard’s return, who has missed the last three games as the team concludes a five-game road trip in Denver.
Thrombosis refers to the formation of a blood clot within a blood vessel.
“Damian’s health is our No. 1 priority,” said Jon Horst in a statement. “We will support him as he moves through this weekly process of strict criteria to ensure that it is safe for him to return to play. Doctors have indicated that his situation is very unlikely to occur again. We are thankful that this was identified and medicated quickly, which helps with recovery.”
The team also noted that Lillard’s medication has stabilized the thrombosis, and he will undergo regular testing.
Lillard, currently 34 years old, becomes the second prominent player to experience this condition this season. Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs was diagnosed with DVT in his shoulder and ruled out for the season after returning from the All-Star Game last month.
Notably, this condition has previously impacted various NBA players, including Hall of Famer Chris Bosh, whose career was curtailed by blood clots while with Miami, and Brandon Ingram, whose season ended early due to DVT while with the Los Angeles Lakers.
This diagnosis is not uncommon as DVT usually forms in the lower leg. Lillard’s current situation pauses a season where he achieved his ninth All-Star Game selection, ranking 10th in the NBA in assists and 11th in scoring.
The Bucks may face the playoffs without one of their top players for the second consecutive year, following Giannis Antetokounmpo’s absence last season due to a calf injury in a first-round playoff loss.
