The NWSL Boston franchise has officially settled on its name, Boston Legacy Football Club, after facing backlash regarding the initially proposed name, BOS Nation FC. The name change follows a five-month review period initiated by the NWSL’s granting of expansion rights to the city of Boston in September 2023, allowing for the longest preparation period for a new club in the league’s history.
“Our name is just the beginning,” said Jennifer Epstein, the club’s owner. “It’s what we build together that will give it life. We aim for our values to reflect a city that breathes competition, passion, and pride.”
Kristine Lilly, a two-time World Cup champion and someone who advised the club, added, “It’s a great day when women’s professional soccer returns to Boston. I look forward to cheering on Boston Legacy.”
The decision followed significant feedback from fans and professionals in the soccer community, reflecting a desire to honor Boston’s diverse history and the spirit of women’s soccer. The colors and crest of the club will be announced shortly, while preparations move forward for the team’s debut season in 2026.
