World No. 2 Iga Swiatek has been granted extra security after an incident where an unruly fan yelled insults about her family during a practice session at the Miami Open last weekend, according to a report by the BBC. Increased security measures were implemented ahead of Swiatek’s match on Wednesday, where she was defeated by Alexandra Eala in the quarterfinals.
The problematic spectator was described as aggressive and reportedly shouted personal insults after having previously sent abusive messages to Swiatek online. Following this incident, her team notified authorities, which led to tournament organizers and the WTA enhancing security for her match.
“Security is a top priority. We monitor the network to catch these types of issues,” said a spokesperson for Swiatek. “Constructive criticism is one thing, and threats, hate speech, or disruption during training are unacceptable and must be condemned.”
This incident concerning Swiatek comes shortly after another troubling situation for a tennis player. At the Dubai Championships, Emma Raducanu was interrupted during a match by a spectator displaying stalking behavior, resulting in her requiring additional security measures.
While it’s uncertain if these incidents affected her performance, Swiatek ultimately lost her match against Eala after being a favorite."
