Rockets Edge Cavaliers with Unusual Endgame as Darius Garland Fails Free Throws
In a nail-biting finish, the Houston Rockets managed to secure a victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, despite Darius Garland's unexpected free-throw misses.
The Houston Rockets continued to prove they are contenders this season by edging out the Cleveland Cavaliers 109-108 on Wednesday night.
Now boasting a 29-14 record, the Rockets rank fourth-best in the league. They are one of the few teams that have triumphed against the Cavaliers, as well as the Oklahoma City Thunder—currently the best team in both conferences with identical 36-7 records.
However, the Rockets needed significant assistance from the Cavaliers to pull off this win. Despite having multiple opportunities to clinch the game late, the Cavaliers couldn’t finish strong, leading to a rather strange conclusion.
The fourth quarter kicked off with the Cavaliers executing a 19-0 run that spanned over seven minutes. From there, it became a close matchup, with both teams exchanging leads in the dying moments. Yet, all the excitement culminated in the final five seconds.
With the game tied at 107-107, the Cavaliers controlled the ball and looked poised for the last shot. Instead, Donovan Mitchell opted for a quick three-pointer but fell short. In the scramble for the rebound, Jarrett Allen was whistled for a foul, holding Alperen Sengun, which the Cavaliers unsuccessfully challenged.
Sengun proceeded to make two free throws, placing the Rockets ahead 109-107, but the Cavaliers still had 4.5 seconds remaining. Following a strategic foul by the Rockets, they managed to retain their lead.
In a surprising twist, Darius Garland, who had maintained a stellar free-throw shooting percentage of 90.1% up until this game, shockingly missed his first two attempts after being fouled with the chance to win the game. He did hit the third, bringing the Cavaliers within one, but it simply wasn’t enough, as a last-second play from Mitchell went awry.
Entering Wednesday, Garland had not missed more than two free throws in any game this season, marking a significant derogation from his averages as he finished 3 of 8.
