Grizzlies End Tenure with Head Coach Taylor Jenkins After Over Five Years

The Memphis Grizzlies have parted ways with head coach Taylor Jenkins after an impressive five-plus seasons, with interim coach appointed.

The Memphis Grizzlies announced Friday that they have parted ways with head coach Taylor Jenkins after more than five seasons.

“I’m genuinely appreciative of Taylor’s contributions to this team and this city over the past six seasons,” Grizzlies president and general manager Zach Kleiman said in a statement. “This was a difficult decision, given the consistent and tangible development of our players and overall success under Taylor’s leadership. I wish Taylor the very best moving forward.”

Assistant Tuomas Iisalo, in his first season with the Grizzlies, will serve as interim head coach, according to ESPN.

Iisalo previously coached in Finland, Germany, and France.

The Grizzlies currently hold a record of 44-29 this season, securing the fifth seed in the Western Conference. Recently, Memphis faced a loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder with a score of 125-104, marking their fifth defeat in the last seven games.

Under Jenkins, the team compiled a record of 250-214 in the regular season and 9-14 in the postseason. This total of 250 wins marks a franchise record. The team has made playoffs in three of the last five seasons and aims for a fourth consecutive appearance.

Jaren Jackson Jr., the 2022-23 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, is averaging 22.4 points per game this season and was recently named a reserve for this year’s NBA All-Star Game.

Jenkins, who is 40, becomes the second NBA head coach to be fired this season, following Mike Brown of the Sacramento Kings. Before taking charge of the Grizzlies for the 2019-20 season, Jenkins served as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks for five seasons and with the Milwaukee Bucks for one season.
