Betnijah Laney-Hamilton's Injury: Key Guard's Absence Could Affect Liberty's Title Defense

The New York Liberty face a significant setback as guard Betnijah Laney-Hamilton undergoes knee surgery, sidelining her for 5-6 months.

In a significant blow to the New York Liberty’s championship defense, the team announced that veteran guard Betnijah Laney-Hamilton will be sidelined for 5-6 months following knee surgery to repair a meniscus tear.

The 2025 WNBA season is set to commence on May 16, encompassing the regular season until September 11, with playoffs beginning on September 14 and concluding in mid-October. Given her recovery timeline, Laney-Hamilton may miss most if not all of the season.

Press Release Excerpt:

“Earlier this month, Liberty guard/forward Betnijah Laney-Hamilton successfully underwent surgery on her left knee to address an acute meniscus injury. Dr. Riley J. Williams III and Dr. Ben Nwachukwu oversaw the procedure at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Betnijah is currently in rehabilitation and is anticipated to resume basketball activities within 5 to 6 months. Updates will follow as necessary.”

Laney-Hamilton’s injury occurred during the inaugural Unrivaled season, a 3-on-3 basketball league co-established by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier. On March 3, it was announced that she would exit the league early, prompting the Liberty’s investigation into the situation.

While Laney-Hamilton has battled injuries previously, her influence on the game is undeniable. She is an All-Star caliber player whose absence leaves a noticeable void, particularly after the exit of Kayla Thornton to the Golden State Valkyries in the expansion draft. With her out, the Liberty will need to lean on Leonie Fiebich, a promising rookie, as well as veteran Rebekah Gardner, who is returning post-foot surgery.

Despite Laney-Hamilton’s absence, the Liberty still boast one of the strongest rosters in the league, striving for the championship despite increased challenges.
