As part of the 18-3 win against the A’s on Monday night in Sacramento, Chicago Cubs catcher Carson Kelly hit for the cycle.
In doing so, he became the 348th player in MLB history to hit at least one single, double, triple, and home run in the same game. Kelly is the first Cubs player to hit for the cycle since Mark Grace in 1993 and the 18th catcher to accomplish this feat in major league history. The last catcher to do so was J.T. Realmuto of the Phillies on June 12, 2023.
Kelly’s night started with a walk in the second inning and included a homer in the fourth. He continued to impress by hitting a single in the fifth, doubling in the sixth, and later drawing another walk. His final at-bat in the eighth inning was critical as he sought the elusive triple.
He entered the game with only two career triples over 558 games, but managed to hit one traveling 395 feet.
Kelly’s cycle marks the first MLB game played in Sacramento’s Sutter Health Park, where the A’s are currently stationed while working towards a potential move to Las Vegas.
The veteran catcher signed a two-year, $11.5 million contract with the Cubs after playing the previous season with the Rangers and Tigers.
