Trevor Immelman, the winner of the Masters in 2008, shared his thoughts on the significant challenge facing Scottie Scheffler as he aims to repeat his Masters victory. Immelman has transitioned from active player to television commentator and will be leading the CBS coverage of the upcoming Masters.
Only three players have won consecutive Masters titles: Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods. Immelman noted the difficulty of this achievement:
“Winning on the PGA Tour is hard enough, but winning major championships makes it much harder.”
Scottie Scheffler’s Chances
Immelman discussed the factors that make Augusta National particularly intricate, emphasizing the mental and physical toughness required.
He also compared Scheffler’s potential to his attempt to defend his title, recalling his own experience in 2009 when he finished tied for 20th.
Rory McIlroy’s Quest for Grand Slam
McIlroy, a four-time major champion, is keen on achieving a career grand slam, which is within reach this year as optimism swells in the golf community regarding his form.
Immelman expressed cautious optimism regarding McIlroy’s chances:
“I try to lower my expectations, but it’s been elusive for Rory since he has what it seems to win at Augusta National.”
He attributed McIlroy’s struggle in past tournaments to his inconsistent first rounds but added that any potential success during the tournament could create immense excitement.
