Braves Pitcher Reynaldo López to Undergo Shoulder Surgery Following Injury

Reynaldo López, a starter for the Atlanta Braves, is set to have arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder amid the team's winless start to the season.

Reynaldo López is set to undergo arthroscopic surgery to check for any structural damage to his throwing shoulder, as reported by MLB’s Mark Bowman. López was placed on the injured list on Monday due to shoulder inflammation and is anticipated to be sidelined for several months.

“[López] threw a side yesterday and it went good, but he went in after the side and wanted to have his shoulder checked,” said Braves manager Brian Snitker in a press conference. “There’s obviously some inflammation in there. We’re getting him looked at today. I haven’t heard the results yet.”

In 2024, López had an impressive season after transitioning from relief to starting pitcher with a 1.99 ERA and earning an All-Star selection. However, his absence now complicates matters for a Braves team that has started the season with an 0-5 record. The team is also dealing with injuries to other key players and faced a significant setback when Jurickson Profar received an 80-game suspension for a performance-enhancing drug violation.

López’s single start this season saw him concede three earned runs to the San Diego Padres before he was diagnosed with his injury.

As injuries mount, Bryce Elder takes over in the Braves’ starting rotation. Despite the odds, the team hopes to recover from their rocky beginning to the season.
