2025 NFL Schedule Speculations: Chiefs May Play on Christmas Annually

The Kansas City Chiefs might become a fixture on Christmas Day, potentially playing annually, as they favor a schedule including Christmas games.

The Kansas City Chiefs have played on Christmas in each of the past two seasons, and if they get their way, it sounds like they’ll once again be playing on Christmas this year.

The NFL recently revealed that the 2025 schedule will include three games on Dec. 25, marking a total of six teams playing on Christmas. According to The Athletic, the Chiefs would like the NFL to make them a “fixture” for Christmas games. They aim to appear every Christmas, similar to how the Cowboys and Lions do on Thanksgiving.

The Chiefs have played a total of five Christmas games in their history, including a notable 1971 playoff game where they fell to the Miami Dolphins in double overtime. This match was the first in NFL history scheduled for Christmas and marked the league’s inaugural double overtime.

Recently, the Chiefs participated in a Christmas game in 2023, which they lost 20-14 to the Raiders. In 2024, they faced off against the Steelers on Christmas and won 29-10.

Having Christmas on a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday could allow the Chiefs to receive an extended break prior to Week 18. Following their Christmas game last season, they enjoyed an 11-day gap before their next match, which is advantageous just before the playoffs.

It remains uncertain if the NFL will honor the Chiefs’ request, but this is something to watch when the NFL schedule is announced in May.
