The San Diego Padres and star young center fielder Jackson Merrill have finalized a nine-year, $135 million contract extension. The deal also includes a $30 million club option for a 10th season that may convert into a player option.
In total, the contract’s value may escalate to $204 million, depending on plate appearances during the season. This extension won’t begin until the 2026 season, meaning Merrill will be under contract through 2034, and possibly 2035 with the exercised option.
A.J. Preller, president of baseball operations, expressed excitement about the long-term commitment: “Today marks another important step in our journey towards our first World Series championship.”
Merrill performed impressively in 2024, logging a .292/.326/.500 batting line with 24 home runs and 16 stolen bases, while becoming a vital asset for the team.
As they enter the new season at a perfect 6-0, the Padres are counting on Merrill’s ongoing contributions to maintain their success.
