NFL Players Eager for Flag Football in the 2028 Olympics, Goodell Anticipates Quick Resolution

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell shared insights about players' desire to compete in flag football at the upcoming Olympics in Los Angeles.

Flag football is set to debut as an Olympic sport during the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. During the NFL’s annual meeting on Tuesday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell emphasized that players are eager to participate in this inaugural event.

“I’ve heard directly from a lot of players who want to participate and represent their country, whether it’s the United States or the country that they came from,” Goodell remarked.

However, Goodell did not guarantee NFL players’ approval for participation in the Olympics. Yet, he expressed optimism that the league and the NFLPA would reach an agreement within the upcoming 60 days.

Goodell stated, “I believe that’s something we will continue to discuss with not just the union but also the clubs.”

Goodell also underscored the importance of having flag football in the Olympics, believing it would strengthen the sport’s global presence:

“The Olympics is a critical moment for us in the flag development on a global basis. The Olympics are the pinnacle of international sport. For us to participate in that, with both men’s and women’s flag teams from around the globe, is significant.”

Several NFL players have voiced their intent to compete in the Olympics, including Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes who have all expressed their interest in the event.
