Alex Ovechkin is now one goal short of tying Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record of 894 career goals after scoring his 893rd during a game against the Chicago Blackhawks.
Ovechkin’s 40th goal for the season came from a feed by Dylan Strome. The puck ricocheted off the post and found its way into the net, credited to Blackhawks’ goaltender Spencer Knight.
Top five scorers in NHL history:
- Wayne Gretzky, 894
- Alex Ovechkin, 893
- Gordie Howe, 801
- Jaromír Jágr, 766
- Brett Hull, 741
At 39, Ovechkin holds the record for the most 40-goal seasons with 14, well ahead of Sidney Crosby, who trails with seven.
Notably, Ovechkin’s 40-goal achievement this season comes despite recovering from a fractured left fibula sustained in a collision with Jack McBain last November, an injury that sidelined him for over a month. Yet, he returned to scoring immediately after his comeback.
With two games against the Islanders coming up, Ovechkin’s pursuit of Gretzky’s record continues with the Capitals leading the Eastern Conference and having already clinched a playoff berth.
