Ovechkin Matches Gretzky's Record with 894th Goal

Alex Ovechkin ties Wayne Gretzky’s NHL goal record with his 894th goal.

Alex Ovechkin is now only one goal shy of surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s all-time scoring record in the NHL.

Ovechkin netted his second goal during the home game against the Chicago Blackhawks, converting on a power play with 13:46 remaining in the third period while Gretzky was present in the arena for the first time during this historic chase.

Earlier, he had scored his 893rd goal, putting him just one shy of tying and two away from setting a new record. The 39-year-old Russian star now has six games left to break the record this season.

In his initial goal of the night, Ovechkin scored just 3:52 into the match by taking a pass from Dylan Strome behind the net, redirecting the puck off the post and into the goal.

After his goal, the arena’s speakers played “Shake, Rattle & Roll” by Big Joe Turner, and fans chanted “Ovi! Ovi!” before play resumed.

This marks Ovechkin’s 14th season with 40 or more goals, a league record, as he now stands at 41 goals for the year.

Next up, the leading Eastern Conference Capitals are set to face off against the New York Islanders next Sunday.
