MLS Milestone: San Jose and D.C. United Clash 29 Years After Their Historic Match

As Major League Soccer marks its 30th anniversary, San Jose Earthquakes face D.C. United in a significant reunion that highlights the evolution of the league.

Twenty-nine years ago, on April 6, 1996, Major League Soccer’s first game kicked off when the San Jose Clash faced D.C. United. On that day, the Clash triumphed 1-0, thanks to a goal from Eric Wynalda, overcoming a team managed by Bruce Arena, who had John Harkes leading the midfield.

As MLS commemorates its 30th anniversary, D.C. United will face the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday at PayPal Park. Arena continues to coach, but now for San Jose, and another Harkes, Ian, prepares to play midfield.

“Fear is how I felt leading up to that debut match,” said John Harkes, reflecting on his transition to the league.

“Coming from the Premier League, joining this new league was daunting, especially considering the history of the North American Soccer League’s demise.”

Both clubs now must reflect not just on their histories but also on their current situations, as San Jose and D.C. have struggled in recent seasons and aim to reignite their legacy.
