Auburn Reflects on Bittersweet Final Four Defeat to Florida

Despite a painful loss in the Final Four, Auburn's players share gratitude for their journey and support for their rivals moving forward.

SAN ANTONIO – As Florida players reveled in their victory, Auburn’s team formed a huddle on the opposite court, showcasing unity and resilience. Following their 79-73 Final Four defeat to Florida, Auburn faced the harsh reality of a season abruptly ending. They had reached just their second Final Four in history and spent considerable time ranked No. 1.

In this moment, the team huddled in prayer, with Chaney Johnson expressing, “Call God. That’s going to be the name of this year.”

While emotional, the atmosphere shifted to one of gratitude as the team, with 10 seniors or graduate students, reflected on their journey.

“It’s bittersweet to end it this way, knowing we left the national championship on the table,” said center Dylan Cardwell. “Being at Auburn has been the best five years of my life. I am the man I am because God let me come to Auburn.”

Despite faltering in the second half against Florida, Auburn celebrated their achievements, underlining the significance of their journey. “I’m sad we’re not going to be in the national championship,” stated Chad Baker-Mazara, who led with 18 points. But he emphasized the importance of their historic season.

While injuries affected performance, players like Baker-Mazara and Johni Broome showed remarkable perseverance, asserting that they had no excuses. Their enduring spirit and friendship were evident as they looked ahead to the future, hoping for the best for their rivals, Florida, in the upcoming championship match.
