Jaylen Wells of the Grizzlies Remains Conscious After Stretcher Incident
Memphis Grizzlies guard Jaylen Wells has been reported as awake after a concerning incident on the court.
In a tense moment during the game on Tuesday, Jaylen Wells, a starting guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, was taken off the court on a stretcher after making a fast-break dunk. His landing was hard, resulting from a collision with KJ Simpson of the Charlotte Hornets.
Following the incident, Wells was transported to the hospital, but according to Hornets’ play-by-play announcer Eric Collins, “he’s doing OK; he has feeling and is able to move around.” His father stated that Jaylen was “awake and alert” and was eager to find out the game’s score while awaiting X-rays and a CT scan.
The injury, a broken right wrist as reported by his agent, is likely to end his season just ahead of the playoffs for the Grizzlies.
Wells had previously received an outlet pass from Ja Morant before the collision with Simpson caused him to lose balance mid-air, leading to a dangerous fall.
He was motionless for eight minutes before medical staff could safely strap him onto a stretcher and transport him.
Interim coach Tuomas Iisalo noted that Wells was able to move all his limbs, highlighting his resilience, saying, “He’s an incredibly tough kid and had a great season.”
The game’s momentum shifted significantly due to the delay, which lasted over 20 minutes. Officials later penalized Simpson with a Flagrant 2 foul after reviewing the play, citing it as unnecessary and reckless due to the vulnerable position Wells was in.
Before the injury, Wells had played 79 games this season, starting 74, and had averages of 10.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. Ultimately, the Grizzlies won the match against the Hornets, finishing 124-100, placing them in a tie for fourth in the Western Conference.
