LeBron James Becomes the First Male Athlete to Feature as a Ken Doll

LeBron James leads the way in representation as the first male professional athlete to be turned into a Ken doll by Mattel, emphasizing the importance of role models for children.

Basketball superstar LeBron James has made history as the first male professional athlete to be given a likeness in the form of a Ken doll by Mattel.

The toy company introduced the LeBron Ken doll as part of their “Kenbassador” series on Wednesday, following last year’s launch of nine female athlete Barbies, including tennis icon Venus Williams.

“As a young kid, I was fortunate to have role models who not only inspired me but also showed me what’s possible through hard work and dedication,” James stated.
Translation: As a young kid, I was lucky to have role models who inspired me and showed what can be achieved through effort and determination.

James emphasized the importance of having positive figures for youth, expressing pride in his collaboration with Barbie:

“Now, as an adult, I understand how crucial it is for young people to have positive role models. Partnering with Barbie for the LeBron James Kenbassadors doll is an honor. It symbolizes the significant effect role models have on instilling confidence and inspiring dreams.”
Translation: As an adult, I grasp the importance of youth having positive figures to look up to. Collaborating with Barbie to release the LeBron James Kenbassadors doll is a privilege as it signifies the influential role mentors play in boosting confidence and inspiring aspirations.

The doll is pictured wearing sunglasses, headphones, and an unzipped light blue-and-white letterman’s jacket with the initials “LJ” on the chest and the number 23 on the sleeve. It also showcases patches representing Ohio and a crown, with the back stating “Just a kid from Akron.” Inscribed on the T-shirt is “We Are Family,” reflecting the mission of the LeBron James Family Foundation, and it comes with iconic blue Nike sneakers.

Priced at $75, the LeBron doll officially hits the market on Monday.

A video produced by the Associated Press shows James’s delight upon first seeing the doll, where he approvingly described it as “dope,” a contemporary term for “cool.”

While interacting with the doll, he humorously put an “I Promise” wristband on its wrist and adjusted a fanny pack, quipping:

“OK, now we’re ready. He might need a bit of lifting. The legs look a little skinny. Just a bit frail, but that’s dope.”
Translation: It’s time to proceed. He could use some muscle; his legs seem a tad thin and frail, but that’s really cool.

Krista Berger from Mattel stated that Ken is traditionally Barbie’s sidekick and that they aim to celebrate LeBron’s role model status, cultural significance, and the commitment to encouraging the next generation to reach their full potential.
