AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 2025 Masters has begun, commencing with the annual tradition of three legendary figures and former champions teeing off as the Honorary Starters. Six-time champion Jack Nicklaus, three-time champion Gary Player, and two-time champion Tom Watson kicked off play early Thursday morning at the brisk Augusta National Golf Club, just after sunrise.
Nicklaus has been an Honorary Starter since 2010, Player joined in 2012, and Watson, the newest member since 2022, hit his opening tee shot for the fourth time. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Nicklaus’ fifth green jacket and 13th major title.
After Player kicked things off, Nicklaus made a light-hearted joke appreciated by the crowd, hitting his ball with intent, raising both fists high into the Georgia sky.
Watson finished the trio and exchanged a friendly quip with Nicklaus as he prepared his tee. Once Watson’s tee shot hit the fairway, Augusta National’s chairman Fred Ridley announced the 89th Masters officially underway, as these golfing legends pass the torch to future players hoping to follow in their footsteps.
