Miami's Carson Beck Cleared for Throwing as He Advances in Post-Surgery Recovery
Miami quarterback Carson Beck is set to begin throwing again as he recovers from elbow surgery, a significant step in his rehabilitation process.
MIAMI, Fla. — Miami quarterback Carson Beck is nearing the end of his recovery from season-ending elbow surgery, as confirmed by coach Mario Cristobal to CBS Sports.
The Georgia transfer hasn’t participated in spring practices but is set to resume throwing on Monday, marking his first throwing session since the surgery in December, which was necessary to repair an anterior cruciate ligament in his right elbow.
“He’s ready, and we took extra precautions to wait another week since we’re reaching the end of spring ball,” said Cristobal.
Miami’s spring practice will conclude on Saturday with their annual spring game at 4 p.m. ET. Backup quarterbacks Emory Williams and Judd Anderson have primarily shared snaps during his absence. Williams even had playing time in the second half of Miami’s Pop-Tarts Bowl loss in December.
Beck’s Future
Beck was rated as the No. 3 player in the 247Sports’ transfer portal rankings. In his two seasons as Georgia’s starting quarterback, he finished with a 24-3 record before suffering the injury in the SEC Championship against Texas.
Initially, he intended to enter the 2025 NFL Draft, but he decided to stay in college for the Hurricanes soon after entering the portal, thanks to an NIL deal reportedly worth over $4 million.
Replacing Cam Ward, who led Miami to a 10-2 record last season, Beck is seen as a player who can bring similar promise. With a noteworthy history as a high-profile recruit, Beck was projected to be a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, before facing challenges with a high interception rate last season.
Cristobal praised Beck’s football intelligence, stating, “I’m genuinely impressed by his understanding of the game; his football IQ is exceptional.” Despite not throwing this spring, Beck has participated in meetings, walkthroughs, and drills leading up to this moment, indicating a thorough engagement in his training.
