Tennessee Parts Ways with Quarterback Nico Iamaleava Amid Contract Dispute

Tennessee's starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava departs from the team as the spring transfer portal approaches, following a disagreement regarding NIL contract terms.

The University of Tennessee is moving on from starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava, leaving the program just days before the opening of the spring transfer portal.

Iamaleava’s exit comes following a turbulent phase of negotiations concerning NIL contract terms that escalated tension between the two parties. Sources reported that Iamaleava’s camp sought a new deal worth approximately $4 million annually, considerably higher than his original contract.

Previously celebrated for being one of the most notable NIL commitments, a deal approaching $8 million had been struck while recruiting him. However, it appears institutional backing for him has waned significantly in light of the recent developments.

Despite Iamaleava’s strong showing last season, including impressive statistics with 2,614 passing yards and 19 touchdowns, the uncertainty in the quarterback market raises questions about what his future holds. Tennessee plans to search for options for his replacement, with promising internal candidates already in the program.
