NBA Overturns Technical Foul Against Anthony Edwards, Clearing Him for Game vs. Jazz

The NBA has revoked the 18th technical foul of Anthony Edwards, allowing the Wolves star to participate in the decisive game against the Jazz.

The technical foul assessed to the Minnesota Timberwolves’ star, Anthony Edwards, against the Brooklyn Nets on Friday has been rescinded. The NBA announced on Saturday that this decision would allow him to play in the Timberwolves’ regular-season finale against the Utah Jazz on Sunday.

If the technical had remained, Edwards would have faced a suspension for the crucial matchup.

Entering the Friday game, Edwards had already accumulated 17 technical fouls this season. In February, he was ejected during a match against the Los Angeles Lakers, resulting in a suspension for the next game against the Jazz. A player’s 16th tech triggers an automatic one-game suspension, with additional penalties for two more technicals thereafter.

During the second quarter of the game against the Nets, Edwards was called for a foul while defending Keon Johnson beyond the three-point line. Following his complaint about the call, referee Ray Acosta issued a technical foul immediately.

“I tried to play good defense, they called a foul, and I said, ‘Where was the expletive foul?’ and he gave me a tech,” Edwards told reporters. “I hope they look at it and rescind it, so I can play in a couple of days.”

The Wolves’ upcoming game is pivotal. Presently ranked seventh in the Western Conference, Minnesota could finish fourth or fall to eighth depending on the outcome. The team has either 32 or 33 losses at this point in the season.

If Minnesota wins against Utah — a team with no playoff implications — they will solidify a top-six seed and directly qualify for the playoffs without needing to engage in the play-in tournament.
