After an exciting and at times nerve-wracking final round of the 2025 Masters, 72 holes were not enough to name a champion. Justin Rose recorded an impressive 11 under in the clubhouse with a final score of 66, while Rory McIlroy closed in on him down the stretch. A bogey on the 18th left them tied at the lead.
According to Masters regulations, when there’s a tie after 72 holes, a sudden death playoff begins at hole 18 to establish the champion who will receive the iconic green jacket and a lifetime invitation to the Masters.
Masters Playoff Format Leaders at the end of the 72nd hole will commence on the 18th hole. If no winner emerges, they will then alternate between the 18th and the 10th holes until a champion is decided.
The 18th, a challenging 465-yard par 4, requires an excellent tee shot, curving slightly to the left, surrounded by towering trees on both sides and a complex of bunkers. Hole 10, a 495-yard par 4, is traditionally the toughest at Augusta National. A good drive must hook hard to gain distance, but a too far right drive leaves a nearly impossible second shot, while a left shot will likely find trees.
