NBA Awards: Expert Selections for MVP, Defensive Player, Rookie of the Year, and More Without Consensus Winners
Experts weigh in on the MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and more as the NBA awards approach, with no unanimous selections.
Before the 2025 playoffs kick off, we’re reflecting on the regular season and who deserves recognition for their performances over the last six months.
In an outstanding season, there are often exciting awards races as April approaches in the NBA. Favorites usually separate themselves from the competition as the season nears its conclusion. For instance, last year’s MVP was Nikola Jokić, along with other winners like Victor Wembanyama for Rookie of the Year and Rudy Gobert for Defensive Player of the Year.
This year, however, the choices are less straightforward. Nikola Jokić and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander have engaged in one of the most competitive MVP races in recent memory, while Gilgeous-Alexander has emerged as a frontrunner at many sportsbooks.
Wembanyama’s absence has opened up the Defensive Player of the Year discussion more than ever, with many candidates now in the mix for Rookie of the Year as well.
Here’s what our CBS Sports NBA staff has selected as the best candidates for each award this season.
