As of April 14, 14 out of 16 teams have secured a playoff berth, with some vying for the last two openings as the end of the season approaches.
A different franchise has claimed the Stanley Cup each of the past four years. The Lightning were the last team to win back-to-back titles, achieving this in 2020 and 2021.
Before that, the Penguins took home consecutive victories in 2016 and 2017, while the last team to secure consecutive championships were the Red Wings in 1997 and 1998.
The Panthers have been contenders in the last two Stanley Cup Finals, losing to Las Vegas in 2023 but defeating Edmonton last season.
Throughout the last decade, six of the last ten NHL champions have come from the Eastern Conference and four from the Western Conference.
Only two of the past ten Stanley Cup Finals have extended to seven games, and there hasn’t been a sweep since the Red Wings triumphed over the Capitals 4-0 in 1998.
It’s important to note that the most recent instance of the Stanley Cup champion finishing the regular season with the best record was in 2013 (Chicago Blackhawks).
As it stands, the Winnipeg Jets (formerly Atlanta Thrashers) currently hold the best record in the league. However, the franchise has yet to secure a Stanley Cup victory.
