Saints Secure Victory in Fleur-de-Lis Trademark Dispute

A ruling from a U.S. court dismisses a lawsuit alleging wrongful use of the fleur-de-lis logo by a descendant of French royalty.

The New Orleans Saints’ emblem is among the most recognizable in the NFL and has successfully retained its trademark after a court ruled against a lawsuit related to the fleur-de-lis symbol. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit dismissed the case filed by Michael Messier, as reported by Sportico.

In his 2023 petition, Messier claimed to be a direct descendant of the Kings of France and sought to remove the Saints logo based on ownership of the fleur-de-lis. The Saints responded that this was part of a long-standing baseless campaign against their franchise.

The court noted, “[Messier] has not alleged that he or his family make, offer for sale, or sell any products or services using a fleur-de-lis design,” as cited in the court’s decision from IP Watchdog.

Thanks to this favorable ruling, fans will continue to see the fleur-de-lis on the Saints’ helmets every Sunday.
