Paul Pierce Labels Kevin Durant a 'Coach Killer' Amid Suns' Coaching Changes
Kevin Durant's impact on coaching stability at the Phoenix Suns comes under scrutiny as the team makes yet another coaching change.
As spring arrives, the Phoenix Suns have once again changed head coaches, firing Mike Budenholzer on Monday after a disappointing season of 36-46, marking their first failure to reach the playoffs in five years. This decision follows the previous firing of Frank Vogel, who was let go after only one season. Prior to Vogel, Monty Williams was dismissed after the 2023 playoffs, which was Kevin Durant’s inaugural playoff experience with the team.
Pierce expressed concern over Durant’s influence, stating: “I hate to say it and not in a negative way, but he really is [a coach killer]. But that’s what comes with guys like KD…if you don’t fulfill those expectations, you’re always on the hot seat.”
Durant, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, recorded an impressive average of 26.6 points per game during this season while shooting at an accurate 52.7% from the field. He joined the Suns during a blockbuster trade from the Brooklyn Nets just before the 2023 NBA trade deadline.
Currently, Durant is approaching the end of his four-year, $194 million contract and will be 37 at the start of the 2025-2026 season. The Suns are reportedly considering trade offers for him in the upcoming offseason.
