Cooper Flagg's Choice: NBA Dreams or Another Year at Duke?
Duke's standout freshman, Cooper Flagg, considers his future following a remarkable season and his recent accolade in LA.
Less than a week after Duke University finished as national runner-up to the Houston Cougars in the Final Four, freshman star Cooper Flagg arrived at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Flagg was in Los Angeles for the Wooden Award Ceremony after making history as one of only four true freshmen to receive this accolade, which is awarded to the best college basketball player each year.
Flagg, sporting a full New Balance outfit — a brand he signed with in 2024 — spent time with reporters discussing various matters, most notably his decision on whether to return to Duke or enter the NBA, where he is anticipated to be the first overall pick this year.
FOX Sports took the opportunity to speak with Flagg about his draft choices, his record-breaking season at Duke, and more.
Where do you stand currently in deciding between the NBA and returning to Duke, and what are the critical factors influencing your decision?
“I’m assessing my options. We’ve not had much time to discuss it. I took some time for reflection on my season here in LA with my family. There’s no rush; I’ll speak to everyone I need to before making the best decision for myself.”
When considering your decision, who do you think will you rely on the most: your Coach (Scheyer), your family, or your teammates?
“Ultimately, it’s about what feels right for me. My family, agent, and coaches all have input, but it’s about making the right choice for myself.”
Many great players have graced Duke. Who would you include in your Duke basketball Mount Rushmore?
“It’s difficult to narrow it down to just four, but definitely JJ Redick and Christian Laettner. I’d add Grant Hill as well. The last spot could go to many, but I’ll say Zion Williamson since I loved watching his team growing up.”
Joining the ranks of Zion, Anthony Davis, and Kevin Durant as one of the few true freshmen to win the Wooden Award — how does that recognition feel?
“It’s a huge honor, and I’m incredibly grateful for this acknowledgment. I’m just thrilled to be here.”
What are your plans in LA for the Wooden Award: quick visit or more time to enjoy?
“It will be a swift trip as I need to return to Duke and wrap up my classes. I want to spend quality time with my family during this experience.”
Next year, Duke will welcome four freshmen, all five-star recruits. What advice would you offer them as they begin their college careers?
“Don’t hesitate to connect with the current team. Building those relationships early on is vital for understanding the program and integrating into the team.”
