Mike Krzyzewski Hails UConn's Geno Auriemma Following National Championship Victory

Former Duke coach praises Geno Auriemma and UConn's 12th national title after dominating win over South Carolina.

After UConn women’s basketball secured its twelfth national title with a commanding victory over South Carolina, Mike Krzyzewski, the retired Duke men’s basketball coach, praised Geno Auriemma for his impressive coaching over the years.

“His Connecticut team was magnificent,” Krzyzewski commented on Sirius XM’s College Sports show. “They were. I texted him after they won, I said, ‘You were not only good, you were dominant.’ And Geno appreciated that because they truly were.”
Translation: Krzyzewski highlighted UConn’s performance as both remarkable and dominant.

Krzyzewski credited Auriemma not only for the recent triumph but also for his enduring excellence that has positioned him as one of the finest coaches of all time. “It’s not just women’s basketball; he has shown exceptional coaching across all levels,” he said, praising the coach for leading his team to victory not just in 2025 but through decades of successful coaching.

The win was impressive rather than unexpected, as UConn had previously dominated UCLA by 34 points in the Final Four, showcasing their prowess on the court. This championship roster featured standout players such as Azzi Fudd, Sarah Strong, and Paige Bueckers, the top pick in the recent WNBA Draft.

Krzyzewski emphasized that while Auriemma’s players excel, the relentless consistency of his coaching through the years truly makes him a legendary figure in college basketball.

“Geno’s success has been built over four decades; it’s a level of excellence rarely seen in coaching.”
Translation: Krzyzewski commends Auriemma’s sustained success as indicative of outstanding coaching ability.

In this significant championship, UConn achieved victory with an 82-59 score, capturing yet another title and setting high expectations for the future.
