Lions Expected to Hire John Morton as Offensive Coordinator Following Johnson's Departure

The Lions have reportedly decided on John Morton to take over as their new offensive coordinator after Ben Johnson's exit.

The Detroit Lions have their new offensive coordinator. According to multiple reports, the Lions will hire former Denver Broncos passing-game coordinator John Morton to the role, replacing the departed Ben Johnson. Morton previously spent the 2022 season with the Lions as a senior offensive assistant.

Morton is well-acquainted with several key figures in Detroit; he worked with Broncos coach Sean Payton and crossed paths with Lions head coach Dan Campbell. Additionally, Morton held positions with the New York Jets, USC, and the Las Vegas Raiders.

His hiring suggests that internal candidates like Hank Fraley, Scottie Montgomery, Mark Brunell, and Tanner Engstrand won’t be considered for the role. It remains uncertain whether any of Johnson’s offensive assistants will stay in Detroit, especially after the loss of Antwaan Randle El and J.T. Barrett.
