Lakers Extend Rob Pelinka's Contract and Elevate Him to Head of Basketball Operations

The Los Angeles Lakers have re-signed their general manager, Rob Pelinka, and promoted him to the position of president of basketball operations, securing his future with the team.

The Los Angeles Lakers announced on April 18, 2025, that they have re-signed general manager Rob Pelinka to a contract extension and have promoted him to president of basketball operations. Pelinka had previously served as vice president and general manager of the team.

“For eight seasons, I have relied on Rob’s vision and leadership to do what’s best for the Lakers organization,” Lakers team governor Jeanie Buss said in a statement. “I value his partnership and professionalism and believe in his ability to deliver championship-caliber basketball for Los Angeles and the Lakers fans everywhere.”

This extension comes at a crucial time, especially after Pelinka orchestrated a significant trade involving Anthony Davis and Max Christie to acquire Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks.

The trade has been widely regarded as a landmark move, as it positions the Lakers prominently for the next decade, shifting the team’s future as they work to build around their new star.

Aside from the Dončić acquisition, Pelinka has had notable success with the Lakers, leading them to a championship in 2020 and five playoff appearances in six years. With Dončić now onboard, the Lakers are looking to further enhance their roster for continuous championship contention.
