Health Update: Gregg Popovich Recovers After Restaurant Incident
San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is recovering at home following a medical episode at a restaurant earlier this week.
San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is recovering at home after requiring medical assistance this week due to a health scare at a local restaurant.
The 76-year-old coach, who had previously missed much of the season recovering from a mild stroke, was at a restaurant in San Antonio on Tuesday evening when he began to feel unwell. A source familiar with the situation spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity due to the lack of official statements from either Popovich or the team.
TMZ Sports was the first to report on this incident, providing video evidence showing Popovich being taken from the restaurant on a stretcher and into the back of an ambulance. It was noted that emergency services were called by someone who reported that an individual had fainted.
Following a stroke at the team arena on November 2, 2024, assistant coach Mitch Johnson stepped in as acting head coach for the remainder of that season. Despite Popovich being absent, he maintained communication with Johnson and even addressed the team on one occasion in February. During that time, he expressed his desire to return to coaching eventually.
The Spurs have not yet announced whether Popovich will be back for the start of the upcoming season, but he remains under contract through 2027-28.
Gregg Popovich is acclaimed in the basketball community, being a Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, leading the Spurs to five NBA championships, and coaching the USA Basketball team to a gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. He is noted as the all-time wins leader in NBA history and one of only three coaches to have won the NBA Coach of the Year award three times.
Since joining the Spurs in 1988 as an assistant coach, Popovich has held multiple roles, including serving as executive vice president for basketball operations and general manager before taking on the head coaching role in 1996.
