Lakers Award Rob Pelinka with Leadership Title and Contract Extension

The Los Angeles Lakers have extended the contract of GM Rob Pelinka and promoted him to president of basketball operations.

The Los Angeles Lakers have announced that General Manager Rob Pelinka will continue with a contract extension and has been promoted to the position of President of Basketball Operations. This decision comes shortly after Pelinka’s acquisition of Luka Doncic.

Owner Jeanie Buss confirmed these changes on Friday, acknowledging that Pelinka will transition from his role as vice president of basketball operations to his new prestigious title.

While specific terms of the extension were not disclosed, Pelinka has been a key figure since joining the franchise in February 2017, famously orchestrating significant trades such as acquiring Anthony Davis from New Orleans in 2019 and bringing in Doncic in February.

This latest addition of Doncic is perceived as a substantial achievement for both Pelinka and the Lakers as they successfully secured a rising star in his prime.

In addition, with the hiring of rookie head coach JJ Redick, who has led the team to numerous victories, Pelinka’s leadership has come under positive scrutiny.

As the Lakers eye the playoffs this season, they face Minnesota in the first round as the No. 3 seed, having previously celebrated their championship win in the 2020 Florida bubble.

“For eight seasons, I have relied on Rob’s vision and leadership to do what’s best for the Lakers organization,” Buss expressed in her statement. “I value his partnership and professionalism and believe in his ability to deliver championship-caliber basketball for Los Angeles and Lakers fans everywhere.”
