The Baltimore Orioles have had a tumultuous start to their season, registering a 9-12 record, placing them closer to the bottom of the American League East. The primary issue? Their pitching rotation, which ranks last in the league in earned run average.
While injuries have plagued several starting pitchers, there are discussions about shifting the struggling Charlie Morton to the bullpen. The veteran right-hander has allowed at least four runs in each of his five games, ending up with a dismal 10.89 ERA (34 ERA+) and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 1.40.
Manager Brandon Hyde remarked on Morton’s potential demotion saying, “Anything is on the table at [this] point.”
In addition to Morton, the team has seen pitchers like Kyle Bradish and Tyler Wells struggle with elbow injuries, while other key players like Zach Eflin and Chayce McDermott are battling lat strains.
As the Orioles look to fix their pitching woes, only two of their six starters have managed an ERA+ over 70. Dean Kremer is set to pitch against the Nationals in their next game, hoping to adjust the trajectory of the team’s rotation.
