Partey's Future at Arsenal: Facing Interest from Spain and Saudi Arabia
Thomas Partey is considering a contract extension at Arsenal amidst interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Spain.
Thomas Partey favors extending his stay at Arsenal over interest from Saudi Arabian and Spanish clubs, according to CBS Sports sources. The Ghanaian international was expected to leave the Emirates Stadium upon his contract’s expiration this summer, but manager Mikel Arteta recently suggested that Arsenal is ready to offer an extension to the midfielder, who will turn 32 in June.
Partey has also drawn interest from Saudi Arabian clubs, Juventus, and Barcelona, and he’s understood to be a target for Atletico Madrid, the team he departed in 2020 to join Arsenal. Since then, he has faced injury struggles but has shown some of his finest form lately, which is believed to have initiated fresh discussions regarding his future with the club.
Despite Partey’s preference for staying, it remains uncertain if he will agree to an extension. Arsenal is reportedly interested in terms that would secure his position for next season with an option for an extra year. Partey has not ruled this out, but much hinges on the financial offer, as he currently earns over $250,000 weekly, making him one of the top-earning players at the Emirates. CBS Sports indicates that Arsenal intends to bring Partey back at a reduced base salary.
Partey might also see a reduced role in the team. Arsenal is confident about signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, according to CBS Sports sources, after establishing groundwork for the Spanish international’s arrival throughout this season. Real Madrid is also said to be interested in Zubimendi, but optimism in north London suggests Arsenal will secure the player.
When asked last week about any progress in extending Partey’s contract, Arteta remarked: “There is progress with all the players. I’ll leave that to Andrea [Berta], the sporting director, and the club to handle and discuss.”
With Zubimendi potentially joining and Partey’s future uncertain, fellow defensive midfielder Jorginho is expected to exit when his contract concludes. The Italian international has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia but reportedly favors clubs in Brazil, with Flamengo being the most frequently mentioned.
