Through the MLB season, CBS Sports experts engage in weekly discussions about various topics. Recent focus has been on the ninth-inning roles of closers this year.
Who is the leading closer in baseball?
Mike Axisa: Recently, we’ve seen established closers, including Emmanuel Clase, Edwin Díaz, and Devin Williams encountering rough patches. It’s difficult to bank purely on past performances since every closer’s outing is pivotal. Therefore, I would take Mason Miller due to his impressive ability to avoid balls in play.
R.J. Anderson: Mason Miller would be my top pick too. His performance this season has left a strong impression as he can consistently prevent solid contact.
Matt Snyder: Although I typically lean towards last year’s standout, which happens to be Clase, the volatility among closers necessitates consideration of current performance over historical data. Right now, Robert Suarez seems to shine the brightest.
Dayn Perry: Currently, I think Robert Suarez is the right choice based on this season’s metrics. He hasn’t allowed a run in 11 innings while showcasing superb strikeout stats.
