The NWSL has submitted a proposal to launch a Division II league in 2026 to enhance player development. The application includes eight existing NWSL teams, providing a robust structure akin to the minor-league system in baseball. Commissioner Jessica Berman emphasized the importance of creating a pipeline for athletes, while U.S. Soccer’s approval is pending.

In an official statement, the NWSL highlighted its commitment to growing the sport and creating new opportunities for players and coaches. The proposed league is positioned as a developmental space for young talents and will feature a double round-robin format, adding playoff competition, creating a pathway for athletes to transition into the professional arena. Additionally, connections with international exhibitions and tournaments will be available for teams, marking a pivotal step in enhancing the structure of women’s soccer in the U.S.
