Lecce have decided not to wear their usual away jersey during the Serie A match against Atalanta on Sunday after the club expressed their disagreement with the Italian Serie A’s scheduling decision following the passing of their physiotherapist, Graziano Fiorita.
Lecce opposed playing on the weekend, and to articulate their disdain, they chose to wear a white jersey devoid of any club insignia, in a unique yet respectful act. The jerseys simply stated, “No value, no color.”
The club released a statement addressing their concerns on social media:
“U.S. Lecce considers the league’s decision to reschedule the match against Atalanta just hours after the passing of our Graziano Fiorita to be terribly disrespectful to the profound grief affecting the boy’s family, the club, and Lecce’s fans.”
“In other equally painful cases, more reasonable decisions have been made. A hierarchy of death seems to emerge based on the prestige of the affected club, or worse, on the role of the person who has passed.”
Fiorita passed away while the team was on a pre-match camp, far from his family, and thus, Lecce insisted, “This match should not have been played… All attempts to postpone it were cynically rejected.”
Acknowledging their decision, Lecce noted:
“Graziano’s memory is not honored by refusing to play or by fielding youth teams. We will play this match of ’trampled values,’ but we will do so wearing a plain white jersey, free of colors, crests, or logos.”
Ultimately, the club announced they will wear a special jersey on Sunday to honor their late physiotherapist.
