Antonio Rudiger is facing a potential four to twelve match suspension for throwing an object at referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea during Real Madrid’s loss to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final.
Rudiger was upset after a foul was called against Kylian Mbappe that denied Real Madrid a last-minute chance. While he was on the bench, he threw an object towards the referee and had to be restrained by teammates.
The referee’s report noted Rudiger was shown a red card due to his aggressive conduct and for throwing the object, which he stated did not land close to him. Rudiger expressed remorse publicly, stating, “There’s definitely no excuse for my behaviour last night. I’m very sorry for that…” Should he be charged under section 101 of the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary code, it could lead to a significant impact on Real Madrid’s season, as they pursue the La Liga title, closely following Barcelona with only five games remaining.
