A fan at Wednesday night’s Chicago Cubs-Pittsburgh Pirates game at PNC Park got injured and was taken to a nearby hospital after falling over the 21-foot Clemente Wall in right field onto the field itself. According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, the fan was in critical condition when admitted to the hospital while Pittsburgh Police were conducting an investigation at the scene.
After the incident, the Pirates released a statement saying, “Tonight, during the seventh inning of the game at PNC Park, an adult male fell from the right field bleachers onto the field of play. Pittsburgh EMS, along with the Pirates and Cubs athletic training teams and other PNC Park staff, responded immediately and offered aid. He was transported to Allegheny General Hospital. No further information is available at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”
The fall occurred just after Andrew McCutchen made a double in the seventh inning, putting the Pirates ahead 4-3, which became the final score. A second fan jumped from a lower section of the outfield seating to assist the man who fell. The game was paused for about 10 minutes as trainers and police attended to the fan, who was ultimately carried away on a backboard.
McCutchen expressed his concern on social media, writing, “Truly hate what happened tonight. Can’t help but think about that guy, his family and friends. I pray tonight for him. Let us think about his loved ones and embrace our families a little tighter. I hope he pulls through.”
