A thrilling boxing night is set to occur this Friday at Times Square in New York, highlighted by the main event featuring Ryan Garcia taking on Rolando Romero in the welterweight division.
Garcia returns to the ring after a one-year suspension linked to failed drug tests following his fight against Devin Haney in April 2024. In their previous bout, Garcia put on a stellar show, achieving multiple knockdowns, yet his victory was later turned into a no contest due to the drug issue. Romero poses a significant challenge as a knockout artist who has faced setbacks against Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz.
“I’m here to do my job, knock Rolly out and ride off into the sunset,” Garcia stated at the final press conference. “I’m not concerned about sparring from eight years ago. I have a job to do, and that’s it… We won’t leave it to the judges; Rolly is going to sleep.”
“Being back in New York after a historic event last time is exciting. It was so sweet that we had to do it again.”
The card also aims to set the stage for a rematch between Garcia and Haney, who will also fight on the same card against the talented Jose Ramirez in the welterweight category. Despite the no contest previously, Haney’s fans are left uncertain about his status after being showcased as outmatched by Garcia. Ramirez, who was a unified junior welterweight champion, looks forward to this bout, stepping onto the stage with a record of 3-1 since losing his titles in 2021.
“I’m thankful for this chance to display my talent in front of the amazing crowd in New York. Last time I was here, I became a world champion. I’ve got good feelings,” Ramirez expressed. “My past has prepared me for moments like this, and on May 2, I will come out victorious.”
In a highly anticipated matchup, WBO junior welterweight champion Teofimo Lopez faces off against Arnold Barboza. Lopez is a skilled fighter with past inconsistencies, often attributing them to overly defensive opponents. An undefeated Barboza is expected to bring forth an engaging fight, challenging Lopez to deliver his best performance.
“I’m grateful and excited to show everyone the third iteration of Teofimo Lopez that you haven’t witnessed yet. Get your pay-per-view on DAZN. Friday night is not something to miss. I’ll do whatever it takes,” Lopez remarked.
