NCAA Penalizes Five Former Iowa State Athletics Staff for Breaching Sports Betting Regulations
Five past staff members from Iowa State athletics face disciplinary action for engaging in prohibited sports betting activities.
Five former Iowa State football support staff members have reached a disciplinary resolution with the NCAA after being implicated in a state investigation regarding prohibited sports betting activities within campus athletic facilities from 2021 to 2023. None of the individuals face criminal charges.
According to the Associated Press, the involved staffers — Jace Heacock, Chase Clark, Michael Dryer, Kyle Highland, and Mason Williams — admitted to knowingly breaching NCAA sports wagering bylaws. They will face a one-year show-cause order, which extends through April 24, 2026. If any of them secure positions with another college athletic department during this timeframe, they will be subject to a two-week suspension and compulsory attendance at an annual NCAA Regional Rules Seminar.
Collectively, these five personnel placed over $100,000 in bets across 6,200 transactions (averaging just over $16 per bet) within the specified three-year timeframe, which included bets on both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Iowa State. Their betting activities were revealed during a statewide investigation that also implicated numerous athletes from both Iowa and Iowa State engaged in sports betting; some of these individuals faced charges of underage gambling and identity theft.
Heacock is the son of Iowa State’s defensive coordinator Jon Heacock and served as a graduate assistant with the football team in both 2021 and 2022. Highland currently holds the role of assistant director for football operations at Army, Clark operates as an equipment manager for the Detroit Lions, Williams is an equipment manager at Valparaiso, and Dryer is no longer involved in college or professional sports.
